Sustainability Maps

Maps help us understand and visualize the world. They help to simplify, to provide context, to create a shared language. The intent of this blog is to examine some of these maps as a way to understand sustainability and how it affects us.

This map, called the “Dymaxion Map” was developed in 1943 by R. Buckminster Fuller. He called it the “One Island world” and it really shows a different way of looking at the world from the traditional North-South approach. When I first saw this map, I realised how different the world looked. Asia and North America are shown as close as they actually are. Buckminster Fuller proposed the idea of the GENI: Global Energy Network, which is an interconnected power grid that would connect the world, and would literally connect daytime with night-time, almost doubling the available power.
